Language & Literacy

CLEAR EXPRESSIONS provides reading and literacy intervention through multisensory instruction, using a unique approach, known as Orton-Gillingham (OG). It is neurologically based, as research has proven that multisensory instruction changes the way the brain functions.

It is diagnostic and prescriptive in that the developmental reading needs of the student are considered when planning a lesson, as each lesson is based on the results of past lessons and teaching is towards automaticity and fluency of skill.

OG is structured and sequential. The lesson plans consist of specific patterns and activities to organize learning. Concepts are presented in a specific order, beginning with the most common and consistent concepts.

It is cumulative, as each newly introduced concept/skill builds on the knowledge that the student has gained. Also, the cognitive aspect of it ensures that students are explicitly taught the history, patterns, generalizations and rules that govern the structure of English. This allows the student to apply their knowledge in reading, writing and spelling.

Additionally, since each individual has unique needs, strengths and weaknesses, this approach allows for flexibility so that strengths are maximized and weaknesses are remediated.

Skills and concepts are practiced to the level of requiring no conscious effort or thought, while being able to recall or retrieve information spontaneously.

Lastly, the lessons are oriented towards student success. The student is only asked to read, spell and write what has been directly and explicitly taught. This leaves the student feeling confident and empowered.
